This canvas is just 4x4 inches, so it's definitely little. And don't adjust your sets - you are in the right place - Words and Pictures is having one of its pink moments! (It does happen now and then...)
It wasn't intended to be pink, of course; the colours I used on it are called Hot Cinnamon and Spiced Pumpkin, but once they're over white paint and dabbed back... there's really no escaping the fact that it's pretty pink (or Pretty in Pink for any fans of 1980s teen movies!).
I started out by covering the canvas in strips of the butterflies tissue tape from the Sketchbook set, and then gave the whole thing a couple of washes of paint - some white, some not so white. I forgot to take a picture at this stage.
By now, you can just see the butterflies hovering in the background!
At this point it was all looking a bit neutral (I know - I must just have been in one of those moods), so I grabbed these little sprays that I made up from the Primary Elements powders by Luminarte that I succumbed to after the fantastic Finnabair workshop I attended last summer.
I gave it a couple of spritzes of each, and then did the same with a few of my white mulberry paper roses.
It's on these flowers that you can see how vibrant (and not pink) the colours can also be.
They're dotted over one of the wooden flourishes that I was lucky enough to get from Crafty Emblies before it disappeared. I inked it with Walnut Stain to get it toning in with what else was going on.
The quote is from the Artistic Outpost Typography plate, stamped in Potting Soil, only I've stamped it without its globe. I tore and inked the edges with Walnut Stain before layering it over some cheesecloth.
Obviously I had to ink the edges of the canvas too. Spot the almost subliminal butterfly hovering along the edge there!
The final step was some painty splattering...
and that's my little canvas... sometimes you just have to give in to "pretty" (and pink)!

ReplyDeleteYou took me right back to the Finn weekend with your description here and your quandary of using pinks and I know you are not a 'pink'person but this is beautiful. The sprays over the tape and paint have created a stunning background and the painty splashes are perfect to give it that fabulous finish. I love the saying and the embellishing too. ReplyDeleteWell I know this is not your usual colour palette, but I really love this!! The highlights of colour just behind the roses, really draw the eye in, specially with those fab paint splatters (great touch that). The translucent butterflies in the background are wonderful and I LOVE that quote!!! In fact I love this whole little canvas... I am not really a pink person either usually, but here together with the brown tones I think it looks wonderful!!

Alison, this canvas is really beautiful, allthough it isn´t "your" color. It´s not sooo pinkish because of the combination with the brown and the white splatters. And the quote is wonderful! I find, you could chose this color some more times :)

Pink! Whoo hoo! I was messing about with some oranges today (the color not the fruit) and I swear they were trying their darnedest to look pink so I know how you can't always trust them colors to stay true. But it does make for some interesting artwork! I love this piece and never would have guessed at its small size if you hadn't said.

What really makes it marvelous is white, from the textured cheese cloth to the "just right" amount of splatters.
